On Hold

We all know that feeling. Dial the number, listen to it ring, then the elevator music starts up. Sigh. Commence the "waiting" activities. Who know how long we'll be on hold, how many times we'll hear the song start over or how many mindless activities we'll pick up and complete before getting through to the person we need. Sometimes it's a few seconds, and other times it's a couple hours before we find the answers we need and continue on with life.

Why talk about this? Well, that's what I'm doing right now. I'm waiting, "on hold," to find out where I'll be going and when (Africa, right? Maybe next year?). Sometimes it's discouraging. I want to continue with life, rather than playing tetris and counting the boards in the ceiling with one ear to the phone.

But waiting is hardly a passive thing. I still work, I still practice music, I still try to stay in contact with friends and pursue my relationship with Go'd. I know this phase is just that: a phase. But the unknown sometimes gets to me.

I happen to think it gets to all of us. Why else would we all tense in our seats during a movie at the portrayal of a peaceful afternoon at home, when the music changes to signal an unknown danger? We hear a sound and think of burglars, and then a cat comes around the corner. We breathe again, relaxing; it was just a cat. Yet until the unknown becomes the known it might as well have been a burglar, for our hearts know not the difference.

All that to say this: I still covet your prayers. As I wait, you're waiting with me. Together we trust Go'd because of His inherently trustworthy nature. Thanks for hanging out with me in the unknown, whatever peaceful or suspense-filled music may be playing.

Pray with me?

Hi guys, it's me again. Remember how in the last post I said I was "prayerfully considering" a team going to a coastal area of Africa?  Well, the door has closed for that team. Yes, I'm disappointed, but God has a plan, right?

So now I'm back to figuring out an assignment. I'm still with AltLink, but looking at what other opportunities might be a better fit for me.

So would you pray with me about this? I want to serve in a place where my specific giftings will be put to good use. This may mean more training, it may mean changing my time frame for going overseas, but this I know:

You [G'od] keep him in perfect peace
whose mind is stayed on you,
    because he trusts in you.
Trust in the Lord forever,
for the Lord Go'd is an everlasting rock.

The Next Direction

They say that in newsletters you’re supposed to include some news, so here it is: I’m going to Africa!  I’ve been appointed as a worker with AltLink, and my departure is set for next June (2013).

How did I get to this point? Well, I’ve been in contact with AltLink since March, filling out paperwork, interviewing, writing a statement of faith, doing psych evaluations, and so on and so forth. I guess they want to ensure their workers are in a sound state of mind? Anyway, the culmination of all that was Candidate Week, Aug 13-18, in Georgia. After much prayer, consultation, information, and more, they decided to appoint me and we are prayerfully considering a team going to a coastal area of Africa.

It's a 2 year commitment in a creative access region [read: unfriendly to those who enter as m_ss__naries]. The plan at this point is for me to use teaching English as a platform for building relationships and sharing the Good News.

So, with all of that behind me, the next step is to look forward. In the next 9 months I have to raise all my outgoing funds and monthly support, get a certificate in teaching English as a Second Language, and prepare for going to Africa.

Would you be willing to pray for me? I’m in need of energy, perseverance to do this on my own, and creativity in raising support, both the money and the prayer. If you'd like to make a pledge (prayer or money), let me know and I'll send you more information.

Love you all, and looking forward to walking this path with you by my side.
